Callie Pappas brings over 30+ years of experience in advising organizations on ethics, regulatory compliance, and international transactions. Most recently, Callie retired from Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc., a global leader in metals recycling. As Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, Callie established and directed the company’s independent Ethics and Compliance Department, responsible for promoting adherence to legal and ethical obligations and integrating compliance practices across all business units. Callie’s vision and expertise led to the broadening impact of Schnitzer’s Anticorruption and Ethics Programs. Under her leadership, Schnitzer was awarded The Ethisphere Institute’s prestigious designation as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies® for eight consecutive years (2015-2022). She was also recognized with the Business Ethical Leadership Association’s Emeritus Award, which honors those whose individual achievement has provided enduring and inspirational advocacy for the ethics and compliance profession. As Deputy General Counsel, Callie supported the company’s legal activities, with specific responsibility for import-export, export licensing, international trade litigation, and international commercial transactions.

She began her career in private legal practice in Washington D.C., after which she spent ten years as international counsel at United States Steel Corporation in Pittsburgh.

Callie earned a B.A. and J.D. from the University of Michigan and an M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh.

She has been a speaker at the Portland Business Journal, Compliance Week, Ethisphere’s Global Ethics Summit, and the American Association of Corporate Counsel, among others, on a variety of topics related to anticorruption, ethics, import-export, and international business. Most recently, she delivered a keynote address on ethics at Ethisphere’s 2022 Global Ethics Summit. (Watch keynote address video.) She also guest lectures at several local universities on these topics.
